Goal Setting Secrets for a Happier and Healthier 2019
New Year is the perfect time to press the restart button, reflect on the highs and lows of the past year and look ahead to the future. When it comes to goal setting, it can be challenging to know where to start. Here at The Daffodil we share our tips and ideas on what to focus on when setting goals for a happier and healthier year ahead.
NEW YEAR GOAL #1 | Healthy Eating & Exercise
Whether you’re aiming to lose weight, increase your energy levels or just feel healthier, the first step is to introduce new healthy whole foods and experiment with different ways of cooking. If you’re struggling for healthy food inspiration we would recommend signing up to BBC’s Good Foods Healthy Diet Plan. Try and vary your three meals and snacks as when we become bored we often give up! The second step is to find exercise that you enjoy participating in, for some this could be regular gym workouts for others it could be team sports such as hockey or rugby or fitness classes such as yoga or spinning.
Tip: Try to meal plan at least one week in advance, by preparing the ingredients ahead of time you will be much less likely to reach for convenience food or takeaways.
Tip: Aim for 30-60 minutes exercise per day to get your heart rate going, even if it’s just a brisk walk around the park.
NEW YEAR GOAL #2 | Social Life & Relationships
Want to make more time to spend with friends and family this year? Make a list of the most important people in your life and make it one of your goals to find at least 30-60 minutes per day to connect with your loved ones. You could grab a coffee, meet for dinner, do an exercise class together or even just FaceTime and catch up!
If you are in a relationship that feels one sided or is no longer bringing you joy, now might be a great time to make a change. Whether the relationship is with a partner, husband/ wife or a friend, moving away from a negative relationship can be difficult but it will help you to focus on what it is that you need to be happy and healthy.
NEW YEAR GOAL #3 | Creativity
Creativity is an important part of a healthy, balanced lifestyle. There are countless psychological benefits to having a creative outlet. Some creative ideas to try this year could include learning to play an instrument, painting, journaling, re-decorating your home or experiment with cooking.
Tip: Set aside 1-2 hours per week to let your creative side out.
NEW YEAR GOAL #4 | Home Environment
Besides work, this is where you will spend the majority of your time so it’s important your home environment is organised and relaxing. Take a look at each room in your house and decide if there is anything you no longer need that you can throw away or donate to charity. Organise your wardrobes, kitchen units and under stairs cupboard in a way which works for you. Add some candles, indoor plants and cosy cushions to bring 'hygge' to your home.
